Part 20

Sam walked around a bit finally finding the police captain. After talking some more they finally had a plan, and that he would meet Sam in a couple of hours. So he had some time and went back to go over any additional information he could find.

It seemed most of the information as useless, filled with misinformation and information that contradicted itself. He felt unsure what to believe but somehow he felt closer to the solution than before.

Sam looked up at a knock on the door. The captain was early, but Sam didn’t care.

“May I come in?” the captain asked. Continue reading…

Jack looked up at the knock on his door, waving George Dinen into the room.

“Good, glad you made it,” Jack said, putting a paper aside and rising to meet the vice-Admiral. “Wanted to say thanks for today, and congratulate you for such quick thinking.”

“Thank you sir,” George replied, shaking Jack’s hand, before sitting down again. “Glad it worked out.”

“Well, you justified my decision on promoting you. Some planetside had other thoughts about your promotion,” Jack said to him, having sent off a couple of e-mails about what happened. “I knew you were the right man for the job, Steve thought so to.” Continue reading…

Part 18

Admiral George Dinen walked around the battlecruiser Seydlitz, amazed at the design. Though complex, the simplicity of the design took his y surprise. He could go anywhere on the ship in less than a couple of minutes, with plenty of room despite the fact there were a couple of hundred people o board. Automated systems allowed a smaller crew.

Thinking of the systems, those were beyond expectations as well. He overheard many crewmembers already talking about the performance of the ship. In fact, the performance of the ship had persuaded those in charge of spending to allocate the funds for a second ship, which he heard was now under construction. Two such ships could center a powerful fleet. Continue reading…

Jack looked up at the knock on the door frame to his office, not surprised at all to see Steve standing there. Anyone else and his secretary would have buzzed him.

“I’m ready to get something to eat, what about you?” Steve said, looking in at the office.

“Yeah, I could use a break from these reports. I think they invented such things just to drive me crazy,” Jack said, stretching slightly before getting up to exit the office.

They quickly made their way to the cafeteria, and sat down with a tray. Continue reading…

Morning came too quickly for Jack, and he wished he had a couple of extra hours of sleep. Yesterday had been a busy day with everything that went on. This morning he would talk to the prisoners that had been captured in Afghanistan. He knew that Osama bin Laden was not a Skartian, and he felt slightly disappointed in that fact. Of course sixteen captured Skartians ended up being more than anyone had expected.

Jack made the decision to talk to bin Laden first. After that he would figure out what to do with the man, considering his name would go down in history linked with the attack on the World Trade Center.

He looked up as Steve made his way into the office, followed by Captain Ahmed. Continue reading…

Jack sat looking over the documents of the Seydlitz along with Steve. In truth, both men were looking at the reports while waiting for reports on the operation at Earth. They heard about the call from Captain Ahmed, now they waited to see if the plan worked or not. Questions about how many Skartians were on Earth kept running though Jack’s mind.

“Whoa,” Steve exclaimed drawing Jack’s attention.

“What?” Jack asked, wondering what Steve had read and he missed, or not gotten to yet.

“Did you check out the report on the power and weapons test?” Steve asked, holding up the paper in question. Jack frowned not recalling seeing that test, but knowing it would strain the ship in combat situations. Continue reading…

The intelligence officer waiting patiently for another signal from one of the operatives on Earth. So far, the only action they received had been to extract Captain Ahmed’s parents. Since that point she had not had much to do, and could only hope their actions had helped get the terrorist.

“Anything new Karen,” her commander asked, walking into the room.

“Nothing lately,” Karen replied. “Been quite boring today. Not that boring is bad, but its gets exciting when there is action.”

“I know what you mean,” he replied back at her. “The admiral has been chomping at the bit lately, I swear, that man can be so patient on one subject, and impatient another. It’s like he flips a coin to decide which way he’ll act.” The commander sighed and sat down in an empty chair next to her. Continue reading…

Part 13

The long sleek, powerful form of the battlecruiser Seydlitz crawled slowly though the asteroid field.  Heading out for the last trial, the targeting and weapons systems to make sure they were working together.

“Commence firing run,” Admiral Dinen said, standing on the bridge of the ship.  He watched as the crew carried out the order.  So far he was impressed with the way the ship handled.  If the weapons worked as planned, the Seydlitz would be the fastest and most powerful ship in the fleet.  And a ship he would welcome in a war against the Skartians.

He watched the readouts on the bridge and the ship accelerated to attack speed for the weapons run.  Accuracy was only part of the test, but the total package.  Would the computers work with the weapons and speed of the ship?  He also needed to know if the weapons would be able to function with full power to the shields and engines. Continue reading…

Randall made his way into the Council room, wondering what happened now. He got the request from the president of a special meeting. There was no news from the Skartians, at least that he knew of, so he guessed he would have to wait and see.

“Kinser, you know what’s going on?” Randall asked, seeing the Ilderian ambassador as he sat down.

“No I do not,’ Kinser replied. “I thought you might know something, as you are closest to the Skartians, even though you are at war with them.” Continue reading…

Jack sat in his office, his second in command Steve also in there.

“You know, you spend so much time here, we should move another desk in here,” Jack said to his friend, laughing a bit.

“Sad, but true, but then you couldn’t send me away to my office,” Steve said.

“Forgot about that. Any news about what is going on down there?” Jack asked, looking at the reports. The operation had been ongoing now for over an hour, and he began to worry that something might have gone wrong. A simple extraction mission, not a lot to worry about, but his mind could always think of something. He worried about each soldier, a trait which won him the admiration of the soldiers under his command. Continue reading…
