Part 11: A Lucky Rebellion 1<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Gwen rode into the town of Setta, after an uneventful ride.\u00a0 They made it early much to Zoe\u2019s pleasure.\u00a0 Gwen dismounted at the stable, helping Zoe down before asking the man how much to stable their horse.\u00a0 After exchanging coins with the man, she turned towards the town.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, looks like you\u2019ll be having fun,\u201d Gwen said, sizing up the crowds already.\u00a0 So far she saw way too many people despite having a large market place, or was it due to the large market place.\u00a0 She had hoped such a large area might think the crowd a bit.<\/p>\n

\u201cYep, looks like fun,\u201d Zoe replied, her eyes twinkling with excitement.\u00a0 \u201cI could use some charcoals for my drawings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStill drawing,\u201d Gwen said, looking down at Zoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think I was doing while waiting for you?\u201d Zoe asked.\u00a0 \u201cI had to do something, even sold one drawing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen looked down at her, before asking the next question.\u00a0 \u201cNot any nudes of me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, the people of the town,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, good,\u201d Gwen said, glad that someone she did not know had a drawing of her nude.\u00a0 A disturbing idea to say the least.<\/p>\n

They made their way towards an inn, hoping it would have open rooms.\u00a0 She walked in, surprised upon not seeing an eating area, bar or anything else like that.\u00a0 She walked up to the counter along with Zoe to the woman standing there, who looked at them waiting.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much for a room?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cStandard rates are six creds a night, if you want a bath, its seven, we have more expensive rooms, the suites are eight a night and the luxury suite is ten and includes a bathing area,\u201d she said, obviously well-rehearsed over time.<\/p>\n

Gwen looked over at Zoe who appeared excited again and made up her mind.\u00a0 \u201cIs the luxury room taken?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNope, usually the last one taken,\u201d she said, bored.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll take it,\u201d Gwen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right, top floor, last door,\u201d she said, as Gwen handed over several coins.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho do we ask about filling the bath?\u201d Zoe asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can fill it yourself, indoor running water, must not get out of the backwoods,\u201d the innkeeper replied, looking at Zoe as if she never heard of such a thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on,\u201d Gwen said, tugging Zoe along, before the younger woman could say anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cCity folk, so uppity,\u201d Zoe finally said as they walked the stairs.\u00a0 \u201cHave you seen running water indoors?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it was really starting to catch on in the Realm when I left,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cMany of the older homes and business were getting it, guess it took a while longer to reach out here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I didn\u2019t live in a large town,\u201d Zoe mumbled, crossing her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, now you\u2019ll have seen it, and used it,\u201d Gwen said, as they reached the top floor and headed for the last door.\u00a0 Opening the door she moved in seeing the large room, and a door off to the side, indicating the bath.<\/p>\n

She watched Zoe look on at the tub.\u00a0 \u201cI think we can both fit,\u201d she finally said.\u00a0 Gwen had to agree.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s find something to eat first,\u201d Gwen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not eating here, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it is unusual for an inn to not have a tavern, or at least a bar,\u201d Gwen said, as they unpacked a bit.\u00a0 She changed out of her armors, not wanting to start a fight.\u00a0 As long as she remained neutral, she hoped no one would try anything.<\/p>\n

They walked out heading for the nearest restaurant.\u00a0 She spotted a group of men who caught her eye and groaned.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat,\u201d Gwen mumbled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Zoe asked, having heard Gwen\u2019s statement, and looking around as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Leo is in town,\u201d Gwen stated.\u00a0 She continued on taking Zoe\u2019s hand as they approached the tavern, only to have a couple of people block their way.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother group of damn lesbos headed to the lesbos tavern, how cute,\u201d one said, he looked to be in his mid-twenties, as did his two buddies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI suggest you move,\u201d Gwen said, feeling Zoe\u2019s hand tighten, then released allowing her free movement of both arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr you\u2019ll what?\u00a0 Tell the guards?\u201d he replied, with a laugh that the others joined in on.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr you\u2019ll face me,\u201d another voice said.\u00a0 Gwen looked over to see a large man, who stood about almost a foot taller than she did.<\/p>\n

\u201cOttis, didn\u2019t know you were in town,\u201d the man said, then quickly backed away and took off away from the tavern.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry about them, technoals,\u201d he said, causing Gwen to nod, the group who thought people like her should be killed for loving someone of the same sex.<\/p>\n

\u201cLarge group around here?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, they usually stay on the East side though,\u201d he said, \u201cwelcome though, I know Yvette will love the customers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen stepped inside, seeing the obvious signs of the clientele of the tavern, and were met by a server, who led them to their table, never asking if they were together, but seemed to assume it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is nice,\u201d Zoe said, looking around at the tables.<\/p>\n

\u201cYep,\u201d Gwen said, as she looked around, and were even given a menu to choose what they wanted.\u00a0 Zoe seemed a bit shocked at that, but quickly recovered. Probably not wanting to be called some backwoods person again.\u00a0 She would be in for a lesson of large towns, even Setta seemed a bit behind in technology compared to here.<\/p>\n

Gwen settle din to enjoy the evening, hoping Leo id not spoil it for them.<\/p>\n

Gwen looked on as Zoe made her way through the crowds heading to another merchant that caught her eye.\u00a0 So far she had bought very little, but seemed to enjoy looking.\u00a0 They had looked at jewelry, clothes, and she had managed to look at weapons and armor before stopping for lunch.\u00a0 Now they approached the next merchant, and Gwen saw art supplies.\u00a0 The very thing Zoe had been looking for.\u00a0 She seemed to take her time, looking at everything with the same expert eye she had done with the weapons.<\/p>\n

Gwen watched as the young woman looked through the supplies, paper and other things which she had no idea about.\u00a0 Zoe picked up several things, before finally appearing satisfied with her purchase, then began to haggle for the price.\u00a0 Gwen looked on as she reduced the price by several creds before finally agreeing to ten creds for everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was fun,\u201d Zoe said, putting the purchase into a bag, she felt a bump, and look on to see a kid running through the crowd, and mentally cussed at his parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I guess,\u201d Gwen replied, starting forwards only to have a man blocked their path.\u00a0 She sighed recognizing him as Leo.<\/p>\n

\u201cFancy meeting you here,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cThe very bitch who ruined my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d say you\u2019ve done that on your own, didn\u2019t need my help,\u201d Gwen replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery funny, how about I mess you two up, you can watch as we do things to your little slave,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe?\u2019 Gwen said, raising an eyebrow.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have some new associates,\u201d he said, as two others came up to her.\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s take this somewhere else, shall we?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m going anywhere with you,\u201d Gwen said, standing slightly in front of Zoe, protecting her from whatever might happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get it, I hold the trump card,\u201d Leo said, smiling.\u00a0 \u201cYou see, that kid, well, you\u2019ve been drugged.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen\u2019s eyes went wide in shock.\u00a0 But even as she realized it, she felt herself starting to feel heavy, and a wave of dizziness rolled over her.\u00a0 She knew Zoe was looking at her strangely, and said something, but she couldn\u2019t get her body to move correctly.\u00a0 She fell forward before blacking out.<\/p>\n

Gwen blinked open her eyes, bolting up in a panic, wishing she hadn\u2019t as dizziness washed over her.<\/p>\n

\u201cRelax,\u201d she heard Zoe say, pushing her back down onto the bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cW-Where are we?\u201d Gwen said, quickly recalling what happened.\u00a0 She remembered the market, and Leo confronting them and then something about being drugged.\u00a0 Had he done something?\u00a0 She quickly looked over at Zoe, who appeared fine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in our room,\u201d Zoe answered, confusing Gwen.\u00a0 Had she imagined the entire thing?<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did we get here?\u201d she asked.\u00a0 \u201cAnd what happened with Leo?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, well, he\u2019s been taken care of,\u201d Zoe answered.\u00a0 \u201cSeems like Ottis was walking by when we were confronted, and well, stepped in when he saw you fall.\u00a0 He\u2019s a really nice guy, a big teddy bear if you ask me.\u00a0 His partner is also very nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen tried to keep up with the conversation but found herself lost, aside from the fact the large guy from last night stepped in to help them.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe thought they were technoals, at least until Greis showed up,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

Gwen rubbed her forehead at the information being told to her.\u00a0 Greis was here as well as Leo.\u00a0 It made no sense to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh yea, Greis wants to talk to us.\u00a0 He knows we\u2019re not master slave.\u201d Zoe sad.<\/p>\n

Things seemed to be strange, and she felt horrible, she had allowed herself to caught unaware of the situation knowing that Leo was there.\u00a0 If Ottis had not been passing by, Leo might have hurt Zoe.\u00a0 That thought angered Gwen, wondering what happened to the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Leo?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cDead,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOttis killed him?\u2019 Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, a servant of Greis\u2019 did,\u201d Zoe replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreis ordered his own son killed?\u201d Gwen stated, unsure about hos this conversation seemed to be going.\u00a0 Things seemed rather confusing.\u00a0 \u201cThey must have had quite a fall out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, he did threaten him, and then tried to attack him, even the sheriff said it was self-defense, no charges are to be filed.\u00a0 He got lucky if you ask me,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds more like we got lucky that Ottis was walking by at that moment,\u2019 Gwen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re safe, that\u2019s what matters, I was really worried,\u201d Zoe said, her face showing the concern for the first time.\u00a0 \u201cWhen you collapsed, I was scared, then Ottis showed up.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t believe Leo\u2019s story one bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA big guy with brains, what do you know,\u201d Gwen stated, knowing she owned him a big thank you.<\/p>\n

Gwen sat up, feeling the diminishing effects of the drug, whatever Leo had used.\u00a0 \u201cHow long have I been out?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the afternoon, it\u2019s almost supper time,\u201d Zoe replied.\u00a0 \u201cThe healer said it was slesteria, a mild but quick knock out drug.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen nodded, familiar with it, a quick drug usually used by the military, it would knock out your opponent rather quickly and for several hours.\u00a0 An effective drug for a battle where you didn\u2019t want to kill your enemy.<\/p>\n

Gwen realized she would have to head out, and probably thank Greis and Ottis for their help.\u00a0 Without them she might have been in big trouble, and probably at least one of them hurt.<\/p>\n

****<\/p>\n

Gwen sat down at the table at the tavern where Zoe mentioned Greis wanted to meet with her.\u00a0 It was not very crowded yet, and the supper crowd had yet to arrive.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry to hear about your son,\u201d Gwen finally said, hoping he did not someone blame her for the trouble.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but he left me no choice, sad really, I should grieve him more, but I find I cannot at this time,\u201d he said, surprising her.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you will, a parent should grieve for their children,\u201d Zoe said, speaking up.<\/p>\n

\u201cHmm, yes, that is true, but I think I\u2019ve already done that.\u00a0 He really had left me little choice in the matter.\u00a0 I also knew he was plotting to kill me,\u201d he told them, shocking Zoe speechless.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did you learn that?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cA friend of his said so, that he was teaming up with some others, like Louis and Stephos,\u201d Greis said.\u00a0 \u201cHowever I\u2019ve since learned that Stephos is dead, and Louis is now headed to the Realm for trial and execution.\u00a0 He really had nowhere else to go.\u00a0 In fact, his encounter with you was the last chance he had with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen looked at him for several seconds as he thought about something.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou see, I knew the moment I saw you two that you were not some merchant, though she did play a nice slave.\u00a0 We all were acting it seems, except for Valerie.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think she knew I was acting,\u201d Greis said, taking a sip of the drink.\u00a0 \u201cYou see, I knew who you were.\u00a0 Oh sure, you\u2019ve cut your hair, but I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen felt trapped by his words.\u00a0 He knew, was he going to try some sort of blackmail against her?\u00a0 She prepared herself for anything, but Zoe was the one who spoke up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you say anything then?\u201d Zoe asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou see, I knew she could take care of herself against Leo, and I needed to test him one last time,\u201d Greis said.\u00a0 \u201cHe failed the test that night while you were bathing.\u00a0 I had Lars ready to get the sheriff in a moments notice.\u00a0 When he walked in with his friends, I knew what would happen, and thought he might understand what I\u2019ve told him, someone out there is always stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure he would have changed, even after he met that person,\u201d Gwen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, instead he planned his revenge, while going into the illegal slave trading,\u201d Greis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, what will you do next?\u201d Zoe asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, well, I\u2019ll be selling my company, and if anything happens to me, my first wife will receive my fortune, house, and servants.\u00a0 She is a kind person, passed that on to our daughter,\u201d he sold them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about your daughter, she wouldn\u2019t want to take over?\u201d Zoe asked, confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s already successful in her own, you met her,\u201d Greis said, shocking Gwen at that.<\/p>\n

\u201cValerie is your daughter?\u201d Gwen said, watching him nod yes.\u00a0 \u201cDoes she know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe will, as I hope she takes care of my estate like she does hers, especially the servants.\u00a0 I gave her the option of making them free if she so chooses,\u201d Greis said.\u00a0 \u201cBut,\u201d he stopped as the food was delivered and looked over at Gwen, \u201cI have something else to say to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen tensed, knowing this was the big question, why he wanted to talk to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Realm needs you, in a year things will be so bad there that I fear collapse, and total chaos,\u201d he said, waving his hand to stall her protest, \u201cI\u2019ve heard all the rumors, and lately, I\u2019ve wondered what the truth is, especially considering what your cousin is doing now.\u00a0 We need another member of the Royal family to stand up to what they are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not exactly a person who they will welcome back,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cI have blood on my hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps, but I fear if you don\u2019t do anything, more bloodshed is unavoidable,\u201d he told her.\u00a0 \u201cThousands are at risk, and from my sources, many are wishing you had won that day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t trying anything,\u201d Gwen hissed, knowing that was what everyone thought, Marcy made sure of that when she stabbed her in the back.<\/p>\n

\u201cSame then,\u201d Greis said, taking a bite to eat, \u201cwonderful, how is yours?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen blinked at the sudden turn in the conversation, and looked down at the food, which she had not touched.\u00a0 Looking over at Zoe, she seemed to be deep in thought, which slightly disturbed her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have said my peace to you Gwen, the rest is up to you, but take into consideration, things have changed in the past couple of years, and not for the better,\u201d Greis said,<\/p>\n

They ate the rest of the meal in relative silence, with some talk about the weather and such.\u00a0 Finally they made their way back to the inn, and their room.\u00a0 Gwen wondered what was going through Zoe\u2019s mind, she had been quiet for far too long.\u00a0 Gwen turned to her partner as they got ready for bed, despite not really feeling tired.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did he mean?\u201d Zoe finally asked.\u00a0 \u201cAre you part of the Royal Family of the Realm?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen knew the time had come to spill her secret, yet she fear filled her.\u00a0 Unlike any fear of battle, this was the fear of lose, a betrayal of trust once more.\u00a0 She finally had an idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll tell you in the morning on the trail,\u201d Gwen said, seeing a look on Zoe\u2019s face.\u00a0 \u201cPlease, allow me one more night of happiness with you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think I\u2019ll leave,\u201d Zoe said, \u201cno trust in me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI-I don\u2019t know, only for one more night, I promise to tell you on the road,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 She watched Zoe who finally decided to agree.<\/p>\n

Gwen had her arms wrapped around Zoe, both were tired, and Gwen knew that neither had slept much, of course they had been active most of the night, and then Gwen held her for the rest of the night, not falling asleep.\u00a0 She wanted to preserve the memory in her soul.\u00a0 She felt Zoe move around a bit, restless and Gwen knew why.\u00a0 She had promised, and now the time had come.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe honest answer to your question, am I a part of the Royal family, is yes,\u201d Gwen said, as Zoe turned to look at her.\u00a0 \u201cMy first name is Ruth.\u201d<\/p>\n

She felt Zoe stiffen at the name, but said nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy uncle is the king, and my cousin is Derek, the heir to the throne.\u00a0 When I was twenty I met a mage named Marcy, I should have stayed away from her, but she was outgoing, funny, smart, everything I had been looking for in a girl,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cShe charmed my entire family, never seeing her for the low life she was, the two faced liar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen paused, wondering if Zoe would say anything so far.\u00a0\u00a0 She did not mention that Marcy was the same one now looking for her according to Zeltran, the same one who should be dead.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow did she betray you?\u201d Zoe asked, still looking forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had been working to infiltrate the rebellion under the king\u2019s orders, and done a good job,\u201d Gwen said, recalling her attempts to find the resistance leaders.\u00a0 \u201cThey were well hidden, but I managed to locate them.\u00a0 I went along with a squad of to the town.\u00a0 The group included Marcy, she is a powerful wind mage.\u00a0 We tracked the rebels to a town.\u00a0 I went in first, to scout the town, as the rebels would know me and not be alarmed.\u00a0 However, when I got there, the town had been wiped out.\u00a0 I looked around, seeing Realm soldiers, and bent down to investigate, that\u2019s when the rebels arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen stopped, recalling that day, so much blood had been spilled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey figured I had killed the village with my soldiers, and with the rebels there, an entire town massacred, my troops arrived, and Marcy yelling out how I was with the rebels who had killed the town folk.\u00a0 They refused to listen, I had to fight my way out.\u00a0 I thought I remember seeing Marcy killed that day in all the fighting.\u00a0 I managed to return back home, but it wasn\u2019t pretty,\u201d Gwen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe queen?\u201d Zoe asked, obviously having heard the story that she killed the queen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, she always listened to both sides, and figured her as my only hope for someone to listen to my side,\u201d Gwen said, she could still recall that night.\u00a0 \u201cI walked into her chamber,\u201d she paused before continuing. \u00a0\u201cShe was already dead, stabbed by a knife.\u00a0 I went to investigate, that\u2019s when a guard walked in with the king.\u00a0 He ordered my execution on the spot for murdering the queen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, you didn\u2019t do it?\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, but I did kill a lot of rebels and my own troops that day,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cI was considered a traitor by both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an obvious set up,\u201d Zoe said.\u00a0 \u201cIt all sounds like a set-up, especially considering the queen\u2019s death was supposed to be by you retaliating for the rebel leader\u2019s deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen thought about that, she had been running for so long, and tried to block it all out, she never thought about it much anymore.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey chased you I suppose,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started for home at first, but saw they had already been there, executing all the servants, as punishment, my father and mother had died a year earlier from illness,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cWith my own family saying I was a traitor, I ran, with nowhere else to go. \u00a0I ran to the Shadowlands, where a group cornered me in a building, setting it on fire they shot anyone who came out, of course blaming that on me as well.\u00a0 I survived by jumping out the back when they were not looking.\u00a0 So they assumed I had been killed, but with no proof the king never stopped the order to kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what is going on in the Realm?\u201d Zoe asked, shocking Gwen.\u00a0 She had not expected that question.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure, haven\u2019t been keeping up,\u201d Gwen replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what did Zeltran want?\u201d Zoe asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat my old lover, Marcy is looking for me, to be part of the rebellion,\u201d Gwen spat out.\u00a0 \u201cAfter what she did to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe you should go,\u201d Zoe said after a few seconds of silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo clear your name, so you don\u2019t have to live in darkness anymore,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

Gwen looked at her for a few seconds, seeing that she was completely gung-ho about it.\u00a0 \u201cAll right, we\u2019ll go and see what she wants,\u201d Gwen finally said, uneasy about the situation.<\/p>\n
