Part 17:\u00a0 A Lucky Loose End<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Gwen walked through the palace seeing little things she had not seen last time she had been here.\u00a0 People were working and many seemed to smile.\u00a0 Under her uncle things always seemed tense, as if there was something going on and perhaps there had been and she had been too busy wrapped up in her own world to see the problems.<\/p>\n

Turning the corner she spotted her lover sitting on a stool in the kitchen listening in on some story that the cooks were telling her.\u00a0 Gwen shook her head and made her way on over.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not telling any embarrassing stories?\u201d Gwen asked looking at them all.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo tell an embarrassing story I\u2018d have to have one of you,\u201d the cook replied with a smile, causing Gwen to groan at the situation.<\/p>\n

She wondered if it was too late to rule by fear and make the people quiver at her very approach.\u00a0 It had its appeal in that no stories of her would be told of her.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, she was telling me of some things you did as a child,\u201d Zoe replied, taking a bit of some bread.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpoiling your lunch?\u201d Gwen asked looking at the bread in Zoe\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s good, want some,\u201d Zoe said, offering Gwen some.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a new recipe they wanted me to try.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen reluctantly took the offered bite, chewing for several seconds.\u00a0 \u201cNot bad,\u201d she finally managed to say unsure what else to say.\u00a0 It tasted like bread to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t mind her, she only has skill when it comes to being able to defend people,\u201d Zoe said to the cook.\u00a0 \u201cIt tastes great.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe always did prefer the training grounds to the kitchen, always came in needing a bath,\u201d the cook said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you saying I need one now?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, we took one this morning, I know,\u201d Zoe said leaving Gwen\u2019s mouth hanging open.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmpress, a word,\u201d Renold said walking up to him interrupting anything else which might have been said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Gwen said, once again ignoring the \u2018empress\u2019 part yet glad for the distraction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe gate guards\u2019 state there is an ambassador from the Imperial Empire here to see you,\u201d Renold told her waiting.<\/p>\n

That news shocked her a bit, she didn\u2019t expect to have an ambassador anytime soon, and was thinking of ways to engage in talks with the other empire.\u00a0 In a way, this only made things easier for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right, tell him,\u201d she paused seeing Renold\u2019s nod yes before continuing, \u201cthat I\u2019ll be right there.\u00a0 And have him settled in, see if he wants to freshen up first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course empress,\u201d Renold said, bowing to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd stop that, I\u2019m not the real ruler,\u201d Gwen said watching as he grinned and left leaving her wondering how she could get that across to people.<\/p>\n

She looked over at Zoe who had a smile on her face but said nothing else, even the cook merely grinned but continued her work causing Gwen to wonder how long it would take before they stopped calling her that.\u00a0 She only stepped in to the position to fill a vacuum in power and ensure a civil war didn\u2019t start.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe good,\u201d she said, looking at Zoe before heading off down the corridor to change into something which would be more fitting for meeting with an ambassador with the empire.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Gwen walked into the main room having been informed by Tinis that the ambassador was ready to meet with her.\u00a0 Tinis had no information about why the ambassador was here, but Gwen had a good idea, he wanted to know the state of the Realm, and its new ruler.\u00a0 Could they invade easily or would it be more of a fight than they wanted, that was a trick she had to appear stronger then he was.<\/p>\n

She looked over the ambassador, a bit short, even shorter than Tinis, bald, and appeared to be a very low level fighting power, stronger than normal, but the lowest level fighting power at best.\u00a0 She watched him as he looked back at her, each studying the other for some sign.<\/p>\n

Sitting down at the table she placed her elbows on the table, leaned forward and waited a few seconds for him to finally say something.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, I am ambassador Benard of the Imperial Empire, King Terrance had heard many rumors lately which is why I\u2019m here,\u201d Benard stated diplomatically, but said nothing which Gwen didn\u2019t already know.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Empress Gwen,\u201d she replied not stating that her being empress was a temporary thing, something they did not need to know.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, some of the rumors are true,\u201d Benard said.\u00a0 \u201cThere has been an overthrow of the king.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe brought it on himself, and I\u2019m aware of the Imperial Empire massing troops along our border,\u201d Gwen said seeing slight shock in Benard\u2019s eyes even as they narrowed slightly at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no idea what you are talking about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you, I know you know, and you know I know you know,\u201d Gwen said calmly waiting a few seconds for them both to understand what she said.\u00a0 \u201cI am not my uncle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are of royal blood?\u201d Benard said, his tone a bit shocked, so he had not heard about that at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am the king\u2019s niece, people knew me as Ruth,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cBut I prefer Gwen now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The name had the desired effect as his eyes widened in shock at the name.\u00a0 He probably knew of her, heard the rumors of everything which had gone on before she had come back, the Queen, her own parents and how she died in a fire two years ago.\u00a0 She watched as he professionally recovered knowing he had given up some information in the discussions.<\/p>\n

She looked up Tinis walked into the room looking very nervous about something.\u00a0 She focused her attention on him waiting.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry to interrupt empress, but there is something which you should be informed of right away,\u201d he said to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right,\u201d she said, waiting as Tinis looked at her then back at Benard who she ignored before finally Tinis sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn ambassador from the Hargrang Empire has arrived to speak with you,\u201d Tinis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, offer him a place to stay, bath and food so he can clean up before I see him,\u201d Gwen replied giving the other ambassador the same treatment she was giving Benard.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d he said, bowing and leaving the room as Gwen turned to look back at Benard who seemed to have taken this latest news in stride, revealing nothing about the fact another ambassador had arrived to speak with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere were we,\u201d Gwen said, thinking back to before Tinis entered the room and recalling that Benard had seemed shocked at her name.\u00a0 \u201cRight, I\u2019m the current empress, of Royal blood, and I have everything well in hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

The simple statement seemed to catch Benard off guard for several seconds before he finally replied.\u00a0 \u201cI, are you sure, there is always unrest after such a takeover,\u201d he said to her.\u00a0 \u201cThings can be, delicate, when a new ruler comes to power like yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you felt that unrest when you walked into the town?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch things can be hidden very well,\u201d Benard replied back to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, why exactly are you here, to confirm rumors?\u201d Gwen asked looking at the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cRumors of kings or queens being overthrown are, at best, disturbing to us.\u00a0 You must understand that having an unstable neighbor can cause rebellion and violence to spill over to into our empire, that we cannot allow,\u201d he said to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cA bit like I can\u2019t allow an invading force to threaten my lands,\u201d Gwen said growing tired of this political debate.\u00a0 \u201cWhy don\u2019t you take some time to rest and get your story straightened out back home.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that she stood and walked out rubbing her temple at the thought of having to do this all over again with the other ambassador.\u00a0 Appearances seemed to be so important to these men.\u00a0 A strong ruler and army would be needed if the threat of invasion was to be avoided.\u00a0 All she had to do now was create the appearance that they were stronger than they were at the moment.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Gwen sat down at the table feeling hands on her shoulders.\u00a0 Turning she looked up to see Zoe standing there.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat feels nice,\u201d Gwen said as Zoe massaged her shoulders.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou looked tense,\u201d Zoe replied.\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s the problem?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat isn\u2019t,\u201d Gwen replied.\u00a0 \u201cThese ambassadors are looking for signs of weakness in anything so I can\u2019t afford to be soft, and I have to look like I\u2019m actually in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are in charge,\u201d Zoe replied, moving to sit down next to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never wanted to be the empress, or queen, or whatever,\u201d Gwen replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best never do want power,\u201d Zoe replied.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s why you\u2019ll be so good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you trying to make me feel good?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it working?\u201d she replied continuing her massage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI shouldn\u2019t admit it, but yes,\u201d Gwen replied back to her allowing a few minutes to enjoy the sensations.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, Valerie says she wanted to see you,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, she\u2019s still here?\u201d Gwen said, forgetting that the woman was still here.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe stated something about a business opportunity which came up,\u201d Zoe replied moving around to the front which Gwen used as an opportunity to pull the girl down onto her lap.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere, much better,\u201d Gwen said earning a slight chuckle from Zoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could get used to this,\u201d Zoe said finally.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah?\u201d Gwen said, knowing she had been giving it some thought as well.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t feel comfortable just turning over power to someone she didn\u2019t know.\u00a0 There was a lot at stake this time, her uncle and cousin were both gone now.\u00a0 What would her parents want her to do?<\/p>\n

She pushed that thought away knowing what they would have wanted.\u00a0 They were honorable and loyal to the people and probably wouldn\u2019t have stood for what happened in the past couple of years.\u00a0 Gwen took several moments to consider her next decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, we can meet up with her and have something to eat,\u201d Zoe said, getting back up and dragging Gwen with her.<\/p>\n

Gwen found herself led outside the palace and to a tavern where she spotted Valerie along with the others in her group, and surprisingly she noticed Sven and Otto also with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, the elusive one appears,\u201d Valerie said to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust been busy,\u201d Gwen said, taking a seat at the table earning a few stares at her presence.\u00a0 They obviously never expected the current ruler to enter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have heard,\u201d Valerie said, as Gwen turned her attention to the other two.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell you looked very different dressed like that,\u201d Otto said causing Gwen to look down at her state of dress.\u00a0 She had forgone her leathers and armor when meeting with the ambassadors on the advice of Tinis.\u00a0 He seemed to think the leathers might be too much intimidation and Gwen had allowed herself to agree never expecting to come out here.<\/p>\n

Gwen watched as he was slapped on the back of the head by Sven.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever learns,\u201d Sven said earning a chuckle from Zoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I hear you have gained some business?\u201d Gwen said, turning the conversation to something else rather than the state of her dress.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, a good opportunity to expand into the Realm,\u201d Valerie stated.\u00a0 \u201cSomething I had not expected when I came here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen had to agree, she expected to rescue Zoe and head back to the rebellion unsure what might happen next, never expecting what had happened or to be looked upon as ruler.<\/p>\n

She looked up as another person entered the tavern, surprised to see Cilia walking towards them.\u00a0 Gwen felt a bit off about her lately knowing what group she had been a part of, and the fact she wanted Zoe didn\u2019t help things out.<\/p>\n

\u201cFigured I\u2019d find you here,\u201d Celia said, looking around at the group.\u00a0 \u201cNot the typical group royalty should hang around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve been better friends than anyone else I\u2019ve known,\u201d Gwen said truthfully.<\/p>\n

\u201cGwen\u2019s proven her loyalty to me,\u201d Sven said speaking up.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe has a better heart than most I know,\u201d Lori said speaking up for the first time sitting next to Valerie.<\/p>\n

Celia looked over at Lori and seemed angered by the fact a slave had dared question her.\u00a0 Gwen sighed before deciding it was time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you really?\u201d she asked.\u00a0 \u201cYou don\u2019t act like a proper merchant, and your actions lately make me wonder if you\u2019re not some long lost relative or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother was Annabelle,\u201d she finally said shocking Gwen, who stood unable to say anything for several seconds until she felt Zoe nudge her.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnnabelle?\u201d Gwen finally managed to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, we cousins,\u201d Celia said.\u00a0 \u201cThough I never expected you to recognize me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen took a second to look at the woman again and finally realized why she looked so familiar to her.\u00a0 \u201cYou look like your mother,\u201d Gwen finally said, startling Celia.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot what I expected,\u201d she said finally.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you wanted to take over?\u201d Sven asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Celia said surprising Gwen.\u00a0 \u201cI wanted revenge!\u201d<\/p>\n

The way she said the words surprised Gwen, such malice as Gwen thought about what happened with Annabelle.\u00a0 She had disappeared when Gwen was about four and she was never told.\u00a0 She heard hushed rumors as she got older, about Annabelle who had left, had an affair with some peasant.\u00a0 Now she wondered how much of the rumor was true.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother was hunted by the king, and finally she was killed when I was six,\u201d Celia said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe king\u2019s sister was popular, a lot of people liked her,\u201d Sven said speaking up.\u00a0 \u201cI can recall hearing about it a bit when I was younger. There were some rumors that people thought she should have been given the throne instead of Rick.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was a first to Gwen.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you dedicated everything for revenge?\u201d Zoe asked.\u00a0 \u201cSounds lonely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI only wish I could have been there when he died,\u201d Celia said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t really bring closure, does it,\u201d Gwen finally said seeing Celia\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, it doesn\u2019t,\u201d her eyes going to the floor.<\/p>\n

Gwen noticed Sven seemed to understand as well, and wondered what was in his background which he had gone after revenge as well.<\/p>\n

They looked up as another person entered the tavern, and they watched a nervous looking Tinis walk over to where they sat.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmpress, the ambassador of Hargrang is asking to see you now,\u201d he said nervously, looking around at room.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be right there,\u201d Gwen said, standing and heading back to the palace, before making a decision.\u00a0 \u201cInform him I just need to change.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, after being in that filth, I would as well,\u201d Tinis replied, not catching what Gwen meant.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Gwen strode into the room dressed in her normal armor leathers much to the shock of Tinis, who sputtered as she walked by.\u00a0 The ambassador of Hargring appeared shocked upon her arrival and appearance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m told you wish to speak with me,\u201d she said to him.\u00a0 \u201cBe quick, I\u2019m training the guards next.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUm, yes, the queen should know how to defend herself,\u201d the ambassador said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m doing the training,\u201d Gwen replied back correcting the ambassador.\u00a0 \u201cNow, what do you need?\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement caught the ambassador off guard even more which was perfect for Gwen.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou thought I was someone who doesn\u2019t know how to fight,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cI have no problem leading my army to protect the Realm against all threats.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA-Are you saying the Hargrang Empire is a threat to the Realm?\u201d he replied, suddenly sounding insulted.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou, along with the Imperial Empire have amassed armies along my border,\u201d Gwen said as the door opened.\u00a0 \u201cYes?\u201d she asked looking at Tinis but noticed who was behind him, Brice.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe states he has some information for you,\u201d Tinis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well,\u201d Gwen said, standing and heading out of the room leaving the ambassador stunned.\u00a0 She watched as Tinis looked horrified and Brice amused but headed to another room.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you have?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it true that both the Hargring and Imperial Empires have ambassadors here?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d she said, not questioning his information gathering abilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen I think you\u2019ll like this,\u201d he said, handing her a message which held the seal of the Hargring Empire.<\/p>\n

She unrolled it reading the message, her eyes going wide at what was in it before looking up at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe intercepted a messenger with that on him, thought you might like to know about it,\u201d Brice said giving her a small grin.<\/p>\n

Gwen fanned herself with the parchment before considering the way to deal with this, but first.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive the hunter\u2019s guild a thousand creds for this information, Brice can split it to who he sees fit to earn it from this,\u201d Gwen said much to Tinis\u2019 dismay.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost generous empress,\u201d he said, adding the last part with a grin and earning a glare from her.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood information is always welcome, and I know the risks you took in the past couple of days,\u201d Gwen said as they stood and left leaving only Tinis in the room.\u00a0 \u201cI think I should meet with both ambassadors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure?\u201d he asked, his tone implying he felt the decision was unwise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this will prove most enlightening,\u201d Gwen replied back to him watching him finally bow and leave the room.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Gwen walked into the room seeing both ambassadors already in the room.\u00a0 She wondered if either of them knew what was about to happen and figured probably not.\u00a0 They had no way of knowing she knew their secret.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I thank you for seeing me, but I would have preferred it alone and without you suddenly leaving in the middle of our conversation,\u201d the Hargrang ambassador said and Gwen had to recall his name, Patrick.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatrick, there is a reason why I\u2019m seeing you both at the same time,\u201d she said looking at both of them.\u00a0 She thought she saw Benard look down, almost as if he knew what was going to happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cI highly doubt that,\u201d Patrick replied back while Benard remained silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI received some interesting news,\u201d Gwen said, using the parchment to fan herself.\u00a0 She noticed Benard\u2019s eyes drawn to the paper, but Patrick seemed oblivious to it.\u00a0 \u201cIn fact, I think King Charles would be most interested in this piece of paper, and what your two empires have agreed to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re bluffing,\u201d Patrick said finally.<\/p>\n

\u201cBluffing, it\u2019s possible,\u201d Gwen replied before unrolling the parchment on the table in front of them.\u00a0 \u201cOr, my people intercepted a message between your empires stating invasion plans for against the Realm and the Green Empires.\u00a0 I think I can easily get an alliance with Charles with this information.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI doubt King Charles would listen to the Realm,\u201d Benard finally said, speaking up for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not my uncle,\u201d Gwen finally said.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I knew some of the royal family in the Green Empire from when I was part of the Royal Guard.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure they would remember me and considering recent events and the political nature recently between all the Empires.\u00a0 Are you sure he wouldn\u2019t listen?\u00a0 Are you willing to make that bet?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen waited a few heartbeats as neither one said anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsidering I\u2019ve already sent a messenger off to meet with him and a copy of this note,\u201d she said watching as they now both panicked at the thought of what that might do.\u00a0 \u201cOr I could stop my messenger, and you can move your troops away from massing along the Realm\u2019s boarder.\u201d<\/p>\n

She watched as they took a lot longer to actually think about the situation and she decided to up the pressure.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr, you can allow this invasion to start, then panic when the Green Empire invades yours easily as your armies are engaged with mine,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 That thought seemed to have the desired effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well,\u201d Benard said.\u00a0 \u201cThe Imperial Empire will back down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat!\u201d Patrick said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not allow my Empire to be used by yours,\u201d Benard said.\u00a0 \u201cI am sending off the message now.\u201d<\/p>\n

With that he stood and walked out of the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur armies will be waiting,\u201d Gwen said to Patrick, and left the room as well heading to find Zoe and perhaps something real to eat finally.<\/p>\n
