Part 8: A Lucky Slave? II<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Gwen led Zoe down the hallway following Valerie and Lori into a larger room with several long tables.\u00a0 Servants were busy bring food into the room and setting it on the side table.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn excellent looking feast as normal,\u201d Valerie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, however sadly I think it won\u2019t change your mind, will it,\u201d Greis said.\u00a0 Gwen waited to see how Valerie would handle this situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are retiring next year still,\u201d Valerie said, watching Greis nod yes.\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t do business with your son, so I have to look for someone else now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs I thought,\u201d he said sadly with a shake of his head.\u00a0 \u201cIt seems like I have no choice, if I want to keep my money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen stiffened slightly at the approaching power, knowing Leo was about to enter the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re late,\u201d Greis said.<\/p>\n

He merely shrugged, said nothing and sat down.\u00a0 The entire atmosphere changed despite the smile he had for them all.\u00a0 Gwen recognized the fake smile, having done it enough in her past.\u00a0 The all show smile for someone else\u2019s sake.\u00a0 She watched him, noticing that when the attention went off him a scowl appeared, as if he had somewhere else to go.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeo, congratulations, this is another long standing account you\u2019ve cost us.\u00a0 If you keep this up, when you take over there will be no customers,\u201d Greis said, chastising his son.\u00a0 \u201cBecause of this, I will give you a startup amount of money, once that is gone it\u2019s gone.\u00a0 You will not come back here for any more, nor will you live here, you\u2019re not wasting my money any more.\u00a0 I will be looking for someone else to take over the business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen saw the attitude change in a second, and wished Greis waited a bit before making such an announcement.\u00a0 Now she knew there would be trouble with him, either tonight, or on the road back to Setta.\u00a0 His attitude still puzzled her, there had to be something else going on.\u00a0 She looked over at Valerie who had watched the exchange in silence before looking back at Leo.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re cutting me off?\u201d Leo finally said, anger tinting his voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, you\u2019ll either learn how to conduct a business or fail at it, either way I will not allow you to squander my wealth with your failures,\u201d Greis said.<\/p>\n

For a brief second Gwen thought they might have a fight, and prepared herself as he rose.\u00a0 He glared at her and Valerie before storming out of the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, that went about as well as I expected,\u201d Greis said.\u00a0 \u201cAlways sad when a parent has to cut the child off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure you tried,\u201d Valerie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was never into the business, very much like his mother.\u00a0 She enjoyed the finer things in life, unlike, well that\u2018s unimportant right now,\u201d Greis said, as he looked over at Valerie.\u00a0 Gwen felt something was being unsaid, and that was important.\u00a0 She looked over at Zoe, who sat on a cushion next to her chair like Lori next to Valerie.\u00a0 The position presented several interesting situations.<\/p>\n

Settling in, Zoe had gone to get a plate of food from the serving table, getting more than enough for one person.\u00a0 Gwen took the moment to hand feed Zoe some of the excellent food.\u00a0 It reminded her of her past, but she would enjoy the food tonight and gain some new memories, better ones.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, you\u2019re looking to expand into the Shadowlands?\u201d Greis asked, looking over at Gwen.\u00a0 \u201cWhat is it that you\u2019re looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA bit of everything,\u201d Gwen replied, being a bit vague on purpose.\u00a0 \u201cI wanted to see how Valerie does business.\u00a0 Her reputation proceeds her, and I\u2019m looking for people who might be able to represent me in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI see, well, she\u2019s a shrewd one, always knows the trends, gets good deals, some say she\u2019s touched,\u201d Greis said.\u00a0 \u201cShe makes a good choice, and she\u2019s done such business for me as well in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat can I say, some people have all the luck,\u201d Valerie said, looking over at Gwen.\u00a0 They both knew how luck played into her abilities.\u00a0 \u201cSome heed the advice, and others, well they at too stubborn to see what is right in front of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why I hate to lose you, but I\u2019m set on retiring.\u00a0 It will be sad to see the business go, I started it in my youth and now I\u2019ll see it die,\u201d Greis said.\u00a0 He looked around and perked up a bit.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s time for dessert, Heather, Yvette, will they do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen watched a dark-haired girl and a red-head step forward.\u00a0 Valerie looked them over before looking back to Greis.\u00a0 \u201cAre they new?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYvette is,\u201d Greis said, indicating the dark-haired girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re tastes have improved,\u201d Valerie said with a chuckle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have many tastes,\u201d Greis said, as they settled down for the performance as dessert was passed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny chance of your slave joining them?\u201d Greis asked looking over at Zoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot at this time, still in training,\u201d Gwen replied, feeling Zoe lean against her leg.<\/p>\n

\u201cHad to ask, worst you would have said was no, and there is always a chance of yes,\u201d Greis said with a smile.\u00a0 \u201cShe is lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes she is, lucky to find her,\u201d Gwen replied, looking down at Zoe.\u00a0 She noticed her attention was fixated on what Heather and Yvette were doing.\u00a0 Looking over at the position she realized they probably would be trying a new position in the future.\u00a0 Maybe the exposure would help expand her horizons for the future.\u00a0 Zoe was a great lover, just needed more experience.<\/p>\n

Gwen led a quiet Zoe back to their own room.\u00a0 Looking down she wondered what was going through that blonde head of hers.\u00a0 She watched as Zoe flopped down onto the bed before saying anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cExciting?\u201d Gwen asked, watching the young woman look up at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know that would happen?\u201d Zoe asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cUm, yes and no.\u00a0 I knew it could happen, but was not sure until it started,\u201d Gwen replied.\u00a0 It was something that many owners did during such meetings, and once it started was not disappointed when Greis asked if Zoe would join.\u00a0 \u201cYou could have joined, I was asked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo thanks,\u201d Zoe replied a bit hastily.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd here I thought you enjoyed prancing around nude,\u201d Gwen said, with a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly in private,\u201d Zoe answered, then blushed.\u00a0 Gwen fell silent for a few seconds.\u00a0 She turned feeling someone approach the room.\u00a0 The knock indicated someone who was wishing to see them.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes?\u201d Gwen called out watching the door open and the older gentlemen entered the room.\u00a0 Gwen did not recall his name at the moment but waited to hear what he had to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cMater Greis told me to inform you that you may use the private bathing chamber, they are fully stocked and ready if you wish to bathe,\u201d he said to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell him thank you,\u201d Gwen replied, knowing they could probably use a bath by now.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well,\u201d he said, with a bow he closed the door and left them alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, shall we go get wet?\u201d Gwen asked, waggling her eyebrows at Zoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cHa-ha,\u201d Zoe replied, who despite her statement already dug out their towels.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on,\u201d Gwen said, moving to the door while Zoe held out her towel and soap.\u00a0 \u201cYou hold onto it, remember, you\u2019re the slave?\u201d<\/p>\n

Green eyes narrowed at the comment, and Gwen felt for sure she heard something about paybacks.\u00a0 Smiling she walked out and right into Valerie and Lori.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, headed to the bath as well?\u201d Valerie asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, you too?\u201d Gwen asked seeing them nod.\u00a0 \u201cIs there enough room for both of us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlenty, Greis\u2019 bath is modeled after mine, it can hold up to ten people for those private parties,\u201d Valerie said.\u00a0 \u201cSo we can have plenty of room without squishing each other.\u00a0 And in case Leo tries something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen nodded, knowing it would be the most vulnerable time for them while they were here.\u00a0 A quick scan of the area did not indicate him around but there were others power levels so the scan was not too accurate.\u00a0 She motioned for Valerie to lead on and followed with Zoe and Lori behind her.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreis seems nice,\u201d Gwen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, he is, but with him retiring, I can\u2019t trust Leo to not stab me in the back,\u201d Valerie replied.\u00a0 \u201cHe has no business sense in him, only thuggary that he uses quite often if he doesn\u2019t get his way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s more concerned with his fighting power than any business,\u201d Gwen said, thinking back to her first meeting with him.\u00a0 He had been smug right up to the point he felt her power.\u00a0 Since then he acted more like someone whose pride had been hurt.\u00a0 She wondered if it was because her power was higher, or she was a woman.<\/p>\n

Entering the bath Gwen looked around the vast room knowing Greis spared no expense in making it.\u00a0 She wondered who enjoyed it more, him or his slaves.\u00a0 Shedding her clothing and handing it over to Zoe, who took it, folded it placing it beside the others.\u00a0 Gwen noticed with a slight smile hers was the least well folded.\u00a0 Washing off a bit then entered the water.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery relaxing,\u201d Gwen said, wrapping her arms around Zoe and pulling her close.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have quite a bit of fun in the bath,\u201d Valerie said, looking over at Lori, \u201cand many times I walk in seeing them having fun without me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask you mistress,\u201d Lori said, smiling.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, when I\u2019m working,\u2019 Valerie replied.<\/p>\n

Gwen took the moment to massage Zoe\u2019s shoulders while listening to the conversation.\u00a0 The exchange between the two informed Gwen a lot about who Valerie was, not that she had any doubt.\u00a0 Too often she had seen abused slaves growing up, especially with her family, or more precise, her cousin.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think anything will happen?\u2019 Valerie asked, being serious.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t know, anything can happen, so I\u2019m always on guard,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cThe life of a bounty hunter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll take your word for it.\u00a0 You mentioned Leo having fighting power, I thought your parents had to have that as well,\u201d Lori said asking the question.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, anyone born can have such magic, but your chances go up if at least one parent has the ability,\u201d Gwen replied.\u00a0 \u201cOf course that doesn\u2019t mean the child will have the same power, and they can be stronger or weaker.\u201d<\/p>\n

She watched them absorb that information.\u00a0 The stronger the parents were, the more the odds were that any child would also be strong.\u00a0 She was proof of that.\u00a0 Both her parents had high fighting power.\u00a0 As a result she and her cousin always competed for being the best.\u00a0 There might be someone out there more powerful, but she had yet to meet that person.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, the most powerful person right now is the king\u2019s son, Derek,\u201d Valerie said, thinking it though. \u00a0\u201cThough there was a rumor about someone else in the Royal Family being very powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t keep up with them,\u201d Gwen replied, wondering how to change the subject.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you know your parents Lori?\u2019 Zoe asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I was taken by slavers, then Miss Valerie bought me,\u201d Lori answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was still young, and with my knowledge of latgics, I knew she would be worth any amount of money,\u201d Valerie said.\u00a0 \u201cSo I made my first purchase and waited until she came of age before doing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you know?\u201d Zoe asked, Gwen felt the woman tense in her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, and when the time came I was more than ready,\u201d Lori replied.\u00a0 \u201cShe never lied to me, so over time I trusted her completely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLying makes things too complex, and I don\u2019t need that in my house.\u00a0 I get enough of that in my business dealings,\u201d Valerie said.<\/p>\n

Gwen said nothing, knowing she had her own secrets from Zoe, and she knew Zoe did as well.\u00a0 However, they managed to get along and things worked out for them both.\u00a0 She also knew neither pushed certain subjects, so they never had lied to each other that she was aware of.\u00a0 Of course she knew given enough time she would have to tell Zoe, or have the balance disrupted by some outside force.<\/p>\n

She paused feeling a fighting aura close in.\u00a0 She felt sure it was Leo and watched the door for several seconds, moving from behind Zoe to beside her.\u00a0 She looked over at her, but said nothing, as it seemed everyone had gone quiet.<\/p>\n

The door opened allowing Leo and three others to enter the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeo, how dare you enter the bath uninvited, get out,\u201d Valerie said, covering herself, as did Lori and Zoe.<\/p>\n

Gwen took a moment to evaluate the situation for a few seconds.\u00a0 Leo stood looking at them, his face a scowl removing any handsome feature he might have had.\u00a0 The overall situation at first glance seemed to be in Leo\u2019s favor.\u00a0 They all had some fighting power, and probably hoped to overpower her with numbers, and catching her in a compromising position.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh shut up, this is all your fault, always has been,\u201d Leo said.\u00a0 \u201cSo, I\u2019m going to gain some revenge now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI suggest you leave,\u201d Gwen said, speaking up for the first time, looking at Leo then his two friends.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t like you, and I have no problem beating you and your friends to a pulp.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might have some fighting power, but you never got any training for it, using it to scare people,\u201d Leo stated.\u00a0 \u201cBesides, you\u2019re not much a threat like that, is she boys?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen looked them over seeing them all smile, but none of them really knew what they were getting into.\u00a0 She looked at them evaluating their threat to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure,\u201d Gwen said, rising up out of the water.\u00a0 The other three were now looking her over with anticipation.\u00a0 \u201cTruth is you\u2019re unarmed, and I\u2019m more than capable of protecting myself and these three women, especially with your low ranking powers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen moved towards the group watching their movements and any signs of an attack.\u00a0 Leo\u2019s three companions appeared more focused on her body than any threat she might pose in a fight, a deadly mistake a real trained fighter would not make.\u00a0 It worked to her favor here.<\/p>\n

She quickly moved forward attacking Leo, knocking him off his feet before he could even more.\u00a0 The other three were shocked at the speed of her attack.<\/p>\n

\u201cBitch,\u201d Leo spat out, pulling himself up from where he landed.\u00a0 He wiped off his hands then attacked.<\/p>\n

Gwen dodged the attack studying the pattern and form he used.\u00a0 He had some training, or been in a lot of fights, which probably only served to increase his pride.\u00a0 Still his skill was nothing compared to what she had been through growing up.\u00a0 She kept an eye on the others who seemed to have recovered as one moved quickly towards the bath.\u00a0 She quickly moved over landing a punch on him knocking him back and away from the others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThought you said you could take care of her Leo?\u201d one said.<\/p>\n

\u201cShut up,\u201d snarled Leo, doubling his efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast chance, leave now before any of you get hurt,\u201d Gwen said, hoping at least one might be smart enough to realize their situation.<\/p>\n

No one moved for several heartbeats.\u00a0 Gwen took the opportunity to check on the others before the group attacked again.\u00a0 This time she went on the attack using more force.\u00a0 She knocked Leo off to the side of the room, crashing into one of the walls.\u00a0 Not waiting she followed that up with a second attack sending another person flying, who crumbled to the floor unconscious before someone else barged into the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on in here?\u201d Greis\u2019 voice said, thundering though the room, obviously angry about the noise.<\/p>\n

In a quick movement Gwen put on a towel before facing Greis.\u00a0 His stunned face indicated he had no idea his son entered his house.\u00a0 The other two had stopped their attack as he entered the room.\u00a0 While Greis had no fighting power, he had wealth which could be just as powerful Gwen had learned.\u00a0 His face had gone almost purple with rage.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet out!\u201d he spat out, looking at his son who had managed to climb back to his feet.\u00a0 \u201cGet out, you\u2019ve shamed my name for the last time, and don\u2019t bother coming back this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd who will make me, you pop?\u201d Leo said, angry as well.\u00a0 \u201cYou have no fighting ability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen paused at lending her support, knowing that once she left the probably would still be there.\u00a0 He had to take care of it himself.\u00a0 The two squared off glaring at each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sheriff is on the way master,\u201d another voice said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI may not, but the sheriff is on the way, how are you going to explain this to him?\u201d Greis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey know I live here, wouldn\u2019t take much for me to tell them to go away after taking care of you, an accident I could blame on her,\u201d Leo said, pointing to Gwen, who raised an eyebrow at that.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t take on me, how are you going to take of him?\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re fighting level is way too low to even think about a true battle against me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She watched his body, ready for any movement he might take.\u00a0 She knew from his glare that she made another enemy, not that she cared that much.\u00a0 She had other enemies stronger than Leo looking for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m outta here,\u201d one of the others said.\u00a0 The other one agreed and they picked up their unconscious friend and quickly left the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve made a mistake old man,\u201d Leo said, pointing at Greis before walking out of the room himself.<\/p>\n

Gwen turned to Greis who seemed unfazed by it all.\u00a0 Taking a moment to look over the occupants and the room he turned to Valerie.\u00a0 \u201cI must apologize for that.\u00a0 I must hope someone buys my business, otherwise it will probably die out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps, I will look around and see if anyone wants it,\u201d Valerie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you interested?\u201d Greis asked Gwen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, not at the moment,\u201d Gren replied, hoping he did not press for an answer.\u00a0 She had no desire to become part of a business at the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, worth a shot, guess I\u2019ll figure something out,\u201d Greis said.\u00a0 \u201cMaybe just put it up for sale.\u201d\u00a0 He apologized once more before walking out of the room<\/p>\n

Gwen made her way back to the bath and settled back in beside Zoe who had been quiet during the engagement.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou all right?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, they didn\u2019t touch me,\u201d Gwen replied.\u00a0 \u201cHas that happened before?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the bath was a first, seemed like he really wanted to harm us this time,\u201d Valerie said, her voice a bit sad.\u00a0 Gwen settled back into the tub, allowing Zoe to snuggle up to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cFighting power can do that sometimes to people, especially if it\u2019s strong enough compared to others,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cSeen it happen before, think because they are strong it makes them right and everyone else is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou seemed to have some nice movers, were you trained? Valerie asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might say that,\u201d Gwen answered.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a painful story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI see, then I won\u2019t dwell on it,\u201d Valerie said, much to Gwen\u2019s relief.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen battles, and no longer want to be part of that world again,\u201d Gwen said finally.<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessional soldier, how high is your fighting power,\u201d Valerie asked.\u00a0 Gwen felt aware that Zoe was listening in intently.<\/p>\n

\u201cHigh enough to get in trouble,\u201d Gwen answered, remaining vague and hoping Valerie would get the hint and change the subject.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill he be back,\u201d Zoe asked, redirecting the conversation back to Greis\u2019 son.<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably not with the sheriff coming, and probably won\u2019t be coming back until after we\u2019ve left,\u201d Valerie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should still be careful on the way out of Banding and back towards Setta,\u201d Gwen replied, taking a moment to think about the situation from a tactical position.\u00a0 \u201cHe might view us as the ones responsible for all of his troubles.\u00a0 If that happens, he might try to ambush us on the way back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat,\u201d Zoe replied.\u00a0 \u201cMaybe with luck we won\u2019t see him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen had to agree with that assessment.\u00a0 She hoped nothing else happened on this mission.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, with Greis retiring, you didn\u2019t want to deal with Leo,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, no, not really, he\u2019s always been hard to deal with,\u201d Valerie said.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ve never gotten along much anyways.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds like you\u2019ve known him for a while,\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew a bit while growing up, when he entered his teens he changed, probably about the time he learned he had fighting power, and could bully others around,\u201d Valerie said.<\/p>\n

Gwen nodded, understand the statement.\u00a0 She had seen it before, but usually only lasted until someone else stronger came along.\u00a0 In the Realm, someone always seemed stronger than you.<\/p>\n

Pushing the thoughts aside she leaned back to enjoy the bath.\u00a0 With Leo probably gone for the night, she could enjoy the bath at the moment.<\/p>\n

Gwen shifted slightly allowing Zoe to get comfortable once more.\u00a0 They left Greis\u2019 place after breakfast and made it out of Bonding without a problem.\u00a0 Now that they were on the trail she was alert for anything that might happen. After a few moments Zoe had found a bit more comfortable spot that did not tease her so much.\u00a0 Valerie mentioned it in the bath last night.\u00a0 Maybe later on Gwen might have some fun, but for now she focused on their surroundings.<\/p>\n

Once on the road they had paired up with another traveler, his slave and two guards.\u00a0 He was a merchant headed to Setta for trade.\u00a0 Gwen hoped another person would deter Leo from anything.\u00a0 She glanced over at Valerie, who was talking with the merchant about some sort of normal business.\u00a0 She felt glad to not be part of the conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou okay,\u201d Gwen asked Zoe, looking down at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYep, thinking,\u201d Zoe replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, and what about?\u201d Gwen asked, normally not one to pry.\u00a0 But she was curious and wondering if Zoe would tell her.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing much, only thinking about how my life might be if I hadn\u2019t run into you that day,\u201d she replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see,\u201d Gwen said, thinking about that for a few seconds before asking the next question.\u00a0 \u201cGood or bad?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d probably be a slave, and not for someone like Valerie, but probably Stephos,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh yes, him, haven\u2019t seen him much lately,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cGuess we lost him a while ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope to never see him again,\u201d Zoe replied.\u00a0 Gwen thought back to the man, and what he wanted from Zoe, and who the buyer behind that was.\u00a0 It had to be serious money for him to continue tracking Zoe, and even some bounty hunters, who were either hired by Stephos or the person trying to get Zoe.<\/p>\n

Fighting powers up ahead meant someone was up there, and she concentrated on it for a few moment.\u00a0 There appeared to be someone and slowed her horse to get even with Valerie, who looked over at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re about to have company, a person up ahead with a fighting aura,\u201d Gwen said, watching as the others heard her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat nonsense, I don\u2019t feel anything,\u201d one of the guard said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is someone there,\u201d Gwen said, looking back at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many?\u201d Valerie asked, slightly nervous, and probably thinking about Leo.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust one that I can tell, but there could always be others.\u00a0 Won\u2019t be able to tell until we close the distance a bit more,\u201d Gwen replied honestly.\u00a0 \u201cOf course it might be a traveler, or guard, going the other way.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked over seeing the guards no concentrating a bit more.<\/p>\n

\u201cYep, there is someone, you must have a very developed sense,\u201d the guard said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHad extensive training in the Realm,\u201d Gwen replied, hoping that ended the conversation.\u00a0 She did not wish to get into a conversation about her background.\u00a0 The turned the corner and saw no one coming down the trail.\u00a0 She knew now they were walking either into an ambush or something else.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, seems like we have a problem here,\u201d the guard said, picking up on the situation of not seeing anyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d Gwen said, stopping.\u00a0 The others stopped as well, looking at the guards and Gwen.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s spring the trap,\u201d Gwen stated, dismounting from her horse.\u00a0 \u201cYou two, protect them, I\u2019ll go down and see who it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou sure?\u201d one of the guards said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYep, be just fine,\u201d Gwen replied, giving Zoe a quick squeeze.<\/p>\n

Moving forward she kept her senses alert for anything that might happen.\u00a0 She thought the aura felt familiar the closer she got to it reaching a point where they both knew about the other as her own fighting power came out a bit.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can come out, we both know we know your there,\u201d Gwen said, looking in the direction of the guy.\u00a0 She watched as a figure stepped out of the bushes and sighed at the familiar sight.\u00a0 She really expected to see Leo, and instead Stephos walked out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, well, disappointed?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, thought you\u2019d given up,\u201d Gwen said, allowing her abilities to come out even more.\u00a0 Not as powerful, she did not wish to make a mistake against him, and looking for anyone else.\u00a0 He had to have someone else with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd give up on what\u2019s mine, you underestimate me,\u201d Stephos said.\u00a0 \u201cI have a stake in that girl, she is mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both of them drew their swords, as Gwen waited for him to spring the trap.\u00a0 She finally felt the mage in the shadows, and pulled out a throwing star before replying to him.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s my lover, not your slave.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Stephos said, shocked at the statement.\u00a0 His face went red with rage at her comment form some reason.\u00a0 \u201cHow dare you, she was my ticket to greatness!\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen really had no idea about that statement, but felt the mage pour magic out onto the road.\u00a0 Taking a quick jump off the road as the earth shot up missing her.\u00a0 An Earth mage she thought quickly before releasing the star forcing the mage to switch from offense to defense but was not quick enough.\u00a0 Injured his ability to interfere was now severely limited.<\/p>\n

\u201cIdiot,\u201d Stephos yelled.\u00a0 \u201cCan\u2019t you do anything correctly?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen watched as he threw a dagger into the area striking the now defenseless mage before turning back to her.\u00a0 He looked at her for a second before starting an attack, charging straight forward with as much power as he processed.<\/p>\n

Dodging the first strike, she avoided a second spotting two figures in the trees, and realized they were archers.\u00a0 Realizing her position she moved quickly putting herself in a better defensive position while avoiding another attack by Stephos.\u00a0 If she moved just right, she could keep him between her and the archers preventing them from firing.<\/p>\n

Deflecting the next attack she watched his body language.\u00a0 His rage had not helped his attack, but he appeared more determined than ever.\u00a0 She understood to end this battle, one of them would have to die this time.\u00a0 He would not back down, nor leave them alone, and she doubted he would even give up at this point.<\/p>\n

Switching from defense to offense she threw one star, hearing the man fall to the ground and kept her focus on Stephos.\u00a0 He was the main target in this battle.\u00a0 As the battle continued his rage took over, and his style deteriorated.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou bitch, you ruined everything, don\u2019t you realize that, everything,\u201d he yelled at her, attacking once more in wide powerful sweeps completely foregoing any defense.\u00a0 \u201cHe wanted her, I was to be rich beyond my dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen almost hesitated at the comment, the most information she had gained yet, and barely managed to block the strike aimed at her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally?\u00a0 Who wanted her?\u201d Gwen asked, hoping to gain even more information from him.\u00a0 Who wanted Zoe this badly?\u00a0 What power did Zoe possess?<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u00a0 Going to sell her yourself?\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t work that way,\u201d Stephos said, almost gloating about that.<\/p>\n

Gwen finally had an opening and threw the second star, hitting the second archer which allowed her to move around more freely.\u00a0 He might have another group around there, but she needed to go on the attack now.\u00a0 Using more strength than previous attacks she struck out, watching as Stephos barely blocked the strike, but stumbled backwards under the power.\u00a0 He recovered and attacked once more, leaving himself completely open.\u00a0 Gwen impaled him quickly, watching his face go from rage to shock at the situation.<\/p>\n

He glanced down at the sword, then back up as she removed the sword from his chest.\u00a0 His sword clanked to the ground, and clutching his wound fell.<\/p>\n

Gwen went over checking the others, both arches were dead, and she retrieved her stars, before looking at the mage.\u00a0 Stephos dagger had impaled him in the heart.\u00a0 Getting her last star she made her way back to the group, and a waiting Zoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t hurt you?\u201d Zoe asked when Gwen got close enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cNope, got lucky, kept him between me and the archers,\u201d Gwen replied, watching as Zoe looked her over anyways.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood,\u201d Zoe said, finally through with her examination.\u00a0 They turned to see Valerie and Lori looking back at her with a bit of a shock.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, not who I was expecting,\u201d Valerie finally said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMe neither,\u201d the other merchant said, causing Gwen to wonder if he had someone after him as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, Stephos, a lot of people will be glad about this,\u201d Valerie stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cPain in the ass for a lot of us,\u201d one of the guards said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s get moving,\u201d Gwen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reward?\u201d one guard asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet someone else have it,\u201d Gwen replied.\u00a0 \u201cThe reputation is something I don\u2019t want.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the money,\u201d the younger of the two guard said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, she\u2019s right, such a reputation would only be a hassle,\u201d the older guard said.<\/p>\n

Gwen mounted the horse, helping Zoe up and placing her in front again.\u00a0 They still had a ways to go before reaching Setta, and someone else would claim the reward, \u00a0\u00a0She was looking forward to relaxing in a hot bath after all of this.<\/p>\n

Gwen walked into the bath behind Zoe.\u00a0 Valerie asked them to stay the night after the completion of the mission, with the promise of a nice meal and hot bath.\u00a0 Zoe accepted right away before Gwen could even try to say yes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, I\u2019ll miss seeing you in that outfit,\u201d Gwen said, watching Zoe take off the skimpy dress that had been part of the slave image.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I can finally look at you without turning my head,\u201d Zoe replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cI liked the position,\u201d Gwen replied, with a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it allowed you to stare down my dress all day long,\u201d Zoe replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou say that like it\u2019s a bad thing,\u2019 Gwen shot back, seeing the green eyes darken slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember, paybacks,\u201d Zoe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t doubt that at all,\u201d Gwen said, getting into the tub to wash off the grim.\u00a0 She handed the soap to Zoe, watching as she dunked her head under the water.\u00a0 \u201cCome here, I\u2019ll get your hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

She washed the long tresses, taking a moment to enjoy the silky hair under her fingers.\u00a0 She always wanted longer hair, but it interfered with her fighting.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, now I\u2019ll do yours,\u201d Zoe said, after Gwen finished.\u00a0 She watched the smaller woman move around behind Gwen, and allowed her to do the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, we have one part of the puzzle, and one problem solved with Stephos gone,\u201d Gwen said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, but the conversation you two had, he yelled something about someone else wanting me,\u201d Zoe said.\u00a0 \u201cDid he say who?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, but we can look out for him, we got rid of one person after you,\u201d Gwen said.\u00a0 \u201cYou should be in the clear until information about Stephos being killed makes the rounds, and then they\u2018ll have to confirm it, and get a new contact out here.\u00a0 All that takes time which we can use to our advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess so,\u201d Zoe replied.<\/p>\n

They moved out of the tub, dried off and dressed for the dinner Valerie promised them.\u00a0 Gwen noticed people were already at the dining room when they arrived.\u00a0 Gwen had seen some of them, but others she had not seen.\u00a0 She assumed they were all part of Valerie\u2019s household.\u00a0 Valerie walked in with two more to bring the total to seven.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we ready?\u201d Valerie asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes mistress,\u201d one of the others said.<\/p>\n

\u201cJasmine is bringing the food in right now,\u201d Pam said, taking a seat next to Lori.<\/p>\n

\u201cExcellent,\u201d Valerie said, looking towards Gwen and Zoe.\u00a0 \u201cWon\u2019t you have a seat?\u201d<\/p>\n

Zoe and Gwen sat down, looking over the seating as another person walked into the room with a platter of meat.\u00a0 Gwen assumed the red-head to be Jasmine.\u00a0 After setting the food down, Valerie said a grace, then started eating.\u00a0 Gwen watched as the group waited until Valerie, Zoe and her, had all taken some form themselves.<\/p>\n

The food was very good, and knew that the cook could work in any royal palace.\u00a0 Taking a moment to watch the group.\u00a0 Despite the fact that Valerie took care of them, they did act like slaves to some extent.\u00a0 Gwen knew some owners never allowed slaves to eat at the same table, others had no problem with it.\u00a0 They seemed to respect each other, and even loved each other, but they needed one ruler, and Valerie was that ruler in this house.<\/p>\n

Gwen listened in as Zoe talked with the others.\u00a0 The girl had been quiet during the trip and felt a bit relieved as she opened up again.\u00a0 Of course Zoe had been preoccupied by something else.\u00a0 On the way back Zoe had to maintain her slave position due to the other merchant.\u00a0 Now she could go back to being just Zoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, where are you from Zoe?\u201d Valerie asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cA small town, don\u2019t even think it had a name,\u201d Zoe replied.\u00a0 \u201cI was told my father died before my birth and my mother gave me up for adoption at the local temple.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat must have been tough,\u201d Valerie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about you?\u201d Zoe asked back.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother split with my father when I was three, so I don\u2019t remember him much,\u201d Valerie said.\u00a0 \u201cHe cheated on her, which was grounds for a separation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen nodded in understanding, something that happened a bit more often in the Shadowlands.\u00a0 Usually the couple separated, and if children were involved, the mother took the kids, the guy ended up marrying the woman if he got her pregnant, after paying off his first wife to help her live on her own.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about you?\u201d Valerie said, looking over at Gwen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAh,\u201d Gwen said, hesitating for a moment.\u00a0 She thought quickly about what she might be able to say, and not lie.\u00a0 \u201cWell, I had a falling out with my family you might say,\u201d she finally said, not a lie, but also not telling the whole truth.\u00a0 \u201cSo, I don\u2019t like talking about them much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFamily problems, I can understand that,\u201d Valerie said, as they finished up the meal and dessert came out.<\/p>\n

Gwen felt relieved when Valerie did not prod for more.\u00a0 The last thing she wanted to talk about was her past, and who she really was.\u00a0 She concentrated on the lovely dessert, a rich chocolate cake.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo,\u201d Valerie stated after dessert, \u201cwhat powers do you have?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen looked up at Valerie, trying to figure out what to say that she did not already know.\u00a0 She had seen Gwen fighting, so it confused her at the question.\u00a0 To her surprise Valerie looked not at her, but over at a shocked Zoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are a latgic, are you not?\u201d Valerie said, shocking Gwen watching as Valerie looked between the two of them for several seconds.\u00a0 Zoe raced from the room before anyone else could say anything leaving them sitting in silence before Valerie recovered enough to say something.\u00a0 \u201cOh my, I thought you knew, especially considering, well, I have made a mistake.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you sure?\u201d Gwen finally asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cFairly certain, I have a detector I use, especially when looking for a slave,\u201d Valerie said.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s crude, and only says if someone is or is not.\u00a0 It went off the moment I met you two.\u00a0 I knew Hans was not one, and you are not, considering your fighting power, it was the logical conclusion she was.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t tell me,\u201d Gwen said silently, but it also made so much sense to her.\u00a0 It explained why Stephos was after her, and why this other person was after her as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cLatgics are very interesting people, as a group they are immensely distrustful of people, and yet, extremely loyal to those they hold dear,\u201d Valerie said, looking around at the others in the room who had watched in silence.\u00a0 \u201cThey keep a lot of information quiet, and most don\u2019t know the real facts about their powers.\u00a0 One is if they remain a virgin until they turn eighteen, then there powers will remain strong.\u00a0 Many who know will either wait to have sex, or have sex early depending on what their power is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen thought about that, before coming to a realization of what Valerie said earlier.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s why you waited with Lori!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, a bit selfish on my part,\u201d Valerie said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGwen, every one of us actually enjoys being in the service of our mistress,\u201d Pam said.\u00a0 \u201cMany nights if we are not chosen to be her bed mate, we sulk.\u201d<\/p>\n

That caused Gwen to laugh, seeing a group of girl sulking because they were not chosen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are all important to the household,\u201d Jasmine said.\u00a0 \u201cMistress bought me from my last master, who beat me every night for wanting to learn how to cook.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a child prostitute at the whore house in Banding,\u201d Pam said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all have our pasts, but we have come together as a family,\u201d Lori said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps I should find Zoe,\u201d Gwen said, thinking about what they said.\u00a0 Zoe left the table in a hurry, and the last thing she wanted to do, was roam around Setta looking for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeak from your heart,\u201d Valerie said, causing Gwen to freeze for a second, recalling something she had been told by Eva, keep your luck in your heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will,\u201d Gwen replied, walking towards their room.<\/p>\n

Gwen paused at the door, scared to open it in case Zoe was gone.\u00a0 A hundred scenarios went thought her mind, before she finally opened the door, and let out a breath of relief seeing Zoe standing by the bed, her back to the door.\u00a0 A look at the bed indicated the girl had been packing, and stopped.\u00a0 Her heart broke at the sight, and almost could not face what might be happening.\u00a0 She moved to look out the window, seeing the large outdoor pool. \u00a0\u00a0The silence between the stretched out for several minutes before Gwen finally spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are one, that\u2019s why Stephos was after you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Zoe answered a few heartbeats later.\u00a0 \u201cI bring luck to people, or so I\u2019m told.\u00a0 Used as a thing, waiting as time passed until they took my virginity all so they could gain my power even more, and after that tossed aside and kept like a pet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen heard the bitterness in Zoe\u2019s voice at the bleak outlook she thought she had on life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you knew about the age factor?\u201d Gwen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh yes, told about it from the time I was little, not much of a future if you ask me.\u00a0 Kept like a thing waiting to mature, all the while someone else is getting all the luck,\u201d Zoe said.\u00a0 \u201cYou probably don\u2019t want anything to do with me now, I lied and used you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen heard the sorrow in the girl\u2019s voice, and her own heart crumbled.\u00a0 She had to know one thing, and forced the question out bracing herself for the answer.\u00a0 \u201cCan I ask one question, and get an honest answer?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d the reply came back after several heartbeats.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you feel anything for me?\u201d Gwen asked.\u00a0 Possibly the most important question.\u00a0 The silence went on for too long and reached for the window sill to remain steady while locking her eyes on the pool, and the ripple of the water.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy plan, after seeing how strong you were, was to seduce you and leave,\u201d Zoe said.\u00a0 Gwen blinked back the sudden tears from the answer.\u00a0 \u201cBut then, something happened I didn\u2019t expect,\u201d Zoe continued on, and Gwen felt arms wrap around her waist, as Zoe placed her cheek between her shoulders.\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t expect the loving touch, how much you made me feel that day in the cave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen felt her heart stop, then beat double time at that admission.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery moment since then, I\u2019ve liked you more and more, I want to be with you.\u00a0 I knew you were beautiful the first moment I saw you, jumping down from the trees to rescue me, like you read about in the fairy tales.\u00a0 I think a part of me fell in love with you at that moment, I wanted to tell you, but,\u201d she trailed off.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were scared of my leaving you,\u201d Gwen guessed, knowing she had the same fear.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gwen turned around to face Zoe, placing her arms around the girl, seeing that she too was crying.\u00a0 \u201cI knew you had a secret, we all carry our secrets,\u201d Gwen finally said, leaning down giving her a light kiss, not demanding, but reassuring.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we okay?\u201d Zoe asked, her voice small, full of fear of loss.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, but let\u2019s go to bed, I\u2019m wiped,\u201d Gwen replied, more worn out than any battle she had been in before.\u00a0 Emotional battles were harder than she thought.<\/p>\n

A knock on the door interrupted them.\u00a0 She looked over seeing Pam\u2019s head poke into the room after a few seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cMistress was concerned, but I can see things have worked out, yes?\u201d Pam said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Gwen said, her arms still wrapped around Zoe for the emotional support the younger girl needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood, she was worried,\u201d Pam replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was fearful she said too much, and doesn\u2019t want to come in herself?\u201d Gwen guessed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething like that,\u201d Pam said.\u00a0 \u201cShe really is a good person.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be mad at her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know, tell her we\u2019ll see her in the morning,\u201d Zoe answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well,\u201d Pam said, giving Gwen a smile before closing the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cTime for bed,\u201d Gwen said, yawning.\u00a0 They both undressed and slipped into bed.\u00a0 Gwen smiled as Zoe snuggled up, and despite both being nude, she felt only happiness to be this close to someone else once more.<\/p>\n
