Part 22<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou wanted to see me?\u201d Dave asked entering the room.<\/p>\n

Greg motioned for him to have a seat watching as he closed the door and sat down. Greg needed to know about the situation of the other groups and if they could help or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need you to contact the lower resistance groups again. If the Alpha resistance group moves we\u2019ll need the help of the lower groups to do all of this,\u201d Greg said to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, you think they are going to help?\u201d Dave asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know, but they are considering it at the moment. If we move quickly it might help, especially considering the Emperor doesn\u2019t know how widespread we are, only about the lower resistance cells.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t know much about the upper class one,\u201d Greg said to him.\u00a0 \u201cWhat about the Beta class resistance?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t trust them too much,\u201d Dave replied back honestly. \u201cI avoid talking to them too much, as a result I don\u2019t\u2019 know where they stand in this struggle.\u00a0 They might see the alphas as something which stands in their way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, that\u2019s about what I thought, stupid ideologies,\u201d Greg replied back. The betas wanted to be alphas and he had a feeling that group wouldn\u2019t settle for anything less.\u00a0 He hoped they might be persuaded but heeded Dave\u2019s words.\u00a0 If they ran to the Emperor everything was over before it even began.<\/p>\n

\u201cGo and speak with Carl again, once that\u2019s done I should have an answer,\u201d Greg said to him.<\/p>\n

Dave nodded and headed back out of the room, both of them hoping they knew what Greg was doing as the stakes were very high.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Ewa glanced up at the buzz of the intercom wanting to rip it off the wall and throw it across the room. She didn\u2019t want to even answer it, but another part of her hoped it was from the resistance, someone she could pound on.\u00a0 No one had stopped her when she left.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d she said listening in for the reply.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Dave, need to see Carl,\u201d the man relied back to her.<\/p>\n

Ewa almost told him to leave and never come back, recalling who Dave was. The man wasn\u2019t part of the resistance, but a group actually trying to do something.\u00a0 It was that difference why she buzzed him in, waiting a few moments until he knocked on the door.\u00a0 She allowed him in and watched as he looked around as she closed the door before looking at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid I come at a bad time,\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou might say that,\u201d Ewa said as recent events came to her. \u201cThey killed him, those bastards killed him!\u201d<\/p>\n

She sank down into the chair never realizing tears were flowing down her cheeks. She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up into sympathetic eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d Dave asked.<\/p>\n

Ewa quickly gave him an abbreviated version of what happened before waiting for him to say something. She had a hard time believing everything which happened.<\/p>\n

\u201dSo, we can\u2019t expect help from here either, great,\u201d Dave said sinking into a chair as well. \u201cGreg was so hopeful that the lower resistance groups would help out if the alphas rebelled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ewa glanced up at the statement unsure what he meant.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe alphas and betas both have resistance groups of their own, as do the Deltas,\u201d Dave said to her. \u201cThe gammas and epsilons are the only group that joined together.\u00a0 Seems like it we can\u2019t trust them, and you probably can\u2019t stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd where do I go,\u201d Ewa said, looking around her small room.<\/p>\n

Dave seemed to consider that for several seconds before replying. \u201cCome on, follow me, I think I can find you a place for a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ewa considered if, but knew staying where she was meant even greater danger. She felt sure the resistance would try something, or report her to the enforcers.\u00a0 Heading out they left the apartment complex and ran right into Frank.<\/p>\n

She felt a hot white anger rush over her and managed to not beat the man senseless knowing that would only attract attention to them, something she didn\u2019t want at the moment. She watched as he approached her seeing Dave tense slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrank don\u2019t come near me if you value your life,\u201d Ewa growled as he stopped in front of her feeling Dave stand beside her.<\/p>\n

\u201cEwa, I-\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t, you knew what type of people they were, you worked for them, did their dirty deeds. I suggest you stay away from me,\u201d Ewa said cutting Frank off before he could say anything to her.\u00a0 Her anger brewing under the surface.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarl was my friend too,\u201d Frank said.<\/p>\n

Ewa acted without thought, slapping Frank, watching as his snapped to the left with the force of the hit.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was my husband,\u201d she said in an angry whisper.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuess I deserved that,\u201d Frank replied rubbing his cheek which started to sport a red handprint on it. \u201cLook, you and Carl left us in chaos, we had no choice in the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo choice, perhaps you could have listened and acted instead of working with the Emperor,\u201d Dave said speaking up.<\/p>\n

Ewa noticed Frank look over Dave for seconds before answering.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat, a beta coming to give us advice. Go back to whatever hole you crawled out of you overblown inflated ego,\u201d Frank snorted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be glad to get out of this stench, but I\u2019m escorting Ewa out of here,\u201d Dave replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can\u2019t go anywhere, the resistance wants another word with her,\u201d Frank snarled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI refuse to go back to those traitors,\u201d Ewa said moving around Frank to continue down the sidewalk. \u201cYou go back to them and tell them I\u2019m going to try and improve all of our lives by doing something, not imagining it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you\u2019re against us, so be it Ewa, but you were warned,\u201d Frank said to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I were you I\u2019d seriously consider which side you are on,\u201d Dave said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least I won\u2019t be a lapdog for a beta or alpha,\u201d Frank said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou already are,\u201d Dave replied as Ewa continued on down the sidewalk. They each said something else but she was too far away to hear now.\u00a0 Dave joined her a few seconds later.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Greg slammed his fist down on the desk, his face red with rage over the answer Terry gave him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey pick a poor time to hold a grudge, piss poor time in face,\u201d Greg growled looking at Terry.<\/p>\n

\u201dToo many don\u2019t believe you. Many think you\u2019re still, as one put it, a bit wacked out,\u201d Terry replied back to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur one chance to actually change things and they suddenly decide now is the time to hold that grudge,\u201d Greg said shaking his head sadly, wondering what else could go wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey fear change,\u201d Terry said.<\/p>\n

That caused Greg to chuckle. \u201cChange?\u00a0 Change is coming whether they are on board or not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really think so?\u201d Terry asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but if we fail then the change will be for the worse, not better. Imagine what Emperor Henry will do if he wins,\u201d Greg said.\u00a0 \u201cThe last big revolt brought about punishments and the elecro-whip, I shudder to think what might come next.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll or nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it would seem, and we have nothing to being to the table to help because they are scared or holding a grudge against me,\u201d Greg said in disgust.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know a few who are willing to help, nothing official mind you,\u201d Terry finally said after several seconds of silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny help would be welcome at the moment,\u201d Greg replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some in the group who don\u2019t know you and think this is the perfect plan to pursue,\u201d Terry said.<\/p>\n

Greg considered this when there was a knock at the study door by Liam. Greg looked over at Terry before back at the door.\u00a0 \u201cEnter.\u201d<\/p>\n

His tall servant entered the room followed by Dave and a woman. Greg waited as Liam gave a slight bow and left the room closing the door.\u00a0 Greg looked at Dave hoping for some sort of explanation of what was going on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Ewa, Carl\u2019s wife and there\u2019s a big problem,\u201d Dave said introducing the woman.<\/p>\n

Greg sat calmly listening as Dave and Ewa explained what had happened. Ewa appeared emotional at what happened to Carl and his death but the worse news was the fact the lower resistance appeared to have fallen apart.\u00a0 It made things look bleaker than they appeared only a few minutes before.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeems like we\u2019re losing allies rather quickly,\u201d Terry said to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll we have to do is get Meia into position, she can do the rest,\u201d Ewa replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou really believe her story?\u201d Terry asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I had a friend who knew her mother. She died believing in Meia, I trusted her so I\u2019ll trust Meia.\u00a0 She\u2019s the only one lately who seems to be telling the truth at all, she\u2019s the only one I have left to believe in,\u201d Ewa said quietly.<\/p>\n

Greg heard the sorry in Ewa\u2019s voice along with the conviction that he understood at the moment as well. Ewa was a friend of Meia\u2019s mother, he was a friend of her father, perhaps fate was tossing them together.<\/p>\n

Of course no he had another problem, as he had almost no one to help out Meia. He hoped at least one of the groups might come together over this bit of news but it seemed everyone too fractured to do anything.\u00a0 Was this part of the plan of the Emperor?\u00a0 Now he had to figure out what their next move was.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe needs a place to stay for now,\u201d Dave said. Greg could tell from Dave\u2019s voice what he meant.\u00a0 He looked over at Ewa before making up his mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can stay here for now, as it seems the resistance isn\u2019t keen on any of us right now,\u201d Greg said to them. \u201cIll have Liam set up an additional room for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He heard her say thanks as he rang for Liam who knocked and entered the room a few minutes later.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou rang sir?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, make up one the guest rooms for our guest here,\u201d Greg said motioning towards Ewa.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt once sir,\u201d Liam said with a bow and didn\u2019t ask any questions.<\/p>\n

Greg watched him walk out before turning back to the other three. He noticed that Terry seemed hesitant with Ewa in the room causing Greg to sigh and realizing that class prejudices would take time to overcome.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny good news that I can give Meia?\u201d Greg finally said looking at each of them hoping for something, anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust what I told you earlier,\u201d Terry said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe resistance isn\u2019t what it was,\u201d Ewa replied. \u201cI don\u2019t even know what they are fighting for anymore.\u00a0 I do know it\u2019s not what I\u2019m fighting for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what is that?\u201d Terry asked.<\/p>\n

Ewa bristled at the question before answering. \u201cMe, I\u2019m fighting to be allowed to work where I please, in what field I want.\u00a0 I hate kids, teaching them a history we all know isn\u2019t right but can\u2019t do anything about without fear of punishments.\u00a0 Not being monitored every second of the day in my class, and people waiting for me to say something wrong.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I\u2019m fighting against, what are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg looked at Terry wondering what he might say. His friend opened and closed his mouth a couple of times before saying anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess then you don\u2019t know,\u201d Terry said confusing Greg.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, if you\u2019re not going to say anything then it mustn\u2019t be important,\u201d Ewa replied back. Greg had to admit he enjoyed watching Terry struggle against another person.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, we\u2019re the ones who have the abilities to create the new government once the revolt finishes, we have the finances to fund it, and the clout to make sure it stays,\u201d Terry replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you think so, the lower classes are not too fond of the alphas, not as badly as we do betas, but almost as much. What makes you think the lower classes will stand by and allow you to do this,\u201d Ewa asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve always had the good of the people at heart,\u201d Terry replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen why have you allowed things to get to this point,\u201d Ewa asked. \u201cIf you really have the good of the people at heart then you wouldn\u2019t have allowed the punishments to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTerry,\u201d Greg said diverting attention back to himself. He noticed that Ewa and Terry were both glaring t him as their anger simmer under the surface.\u00a0 \u201cThe simple fact is we haven\u2019t done anything.\u201d<\/p>\n
