Part 28<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCommander Adama to the bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adama paused in the corridor next to Uri. He was headed to the council to inform them what had happened but it seemed that something else was going on now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be right there,\u2019 Adama said to Uri, and turned to find a communicator to see what was going on. Quickly finding one he called the bridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommander,\u201d Omega said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the problem,\u201d Adama said hearing the worried tone in Omega\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe patrol spotted a Cylon basestar,\u201d Omega said catching Adama\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s it doing?\u201d Adama asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo far, staying just out of our scanning range,\u201d Omega said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSound yellow alert, I\u2019ll be right there,\u201d Adama said, heading back down the corridor passing a councilmember and reaching the lifts to head to the bridge.<\/p>\n

He reached the bridge a few microns later seeing a lot of activity and made his way over to where Omega stood looking at the scanners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the situation?\u201d Adama asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe patrol spotted the Cylon basestar outside of our long range scans, we are within their raiders range now,\u201d Omega said to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it\u2019s a good bet that they know we\u2019re here,\u201d Adama said. \u201cGet me the Enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

He watched Athena carry out the order as Tigh\u2019s face appeared on the scanner.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommander?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a problem,\u201d Adama told him. \u201cThe patrol has encountered a Cylon basestar, between us and Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even as he spoke Athena called out. \u201cIncoming raiders.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRed Alert!\u201d Adama ordered, within microns the bridge was bathed in red light as the warship shifted into a combat mode.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can we help?\u201d Tigh asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can close in and perhaps launch a strike on the basestar it might help,\u201d Adama said knowing that the Enterprise was quite a ways away.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can do that,\u201d Tigh said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me know when you get in range,\u201d Adama stated as the screen went blank and he moved to the command chair. \u201cHelm, plot a course to towards the incoming raider and engage.\u201d<\/p>\n

He watched the bridge crew execute his orders as reports of the viper pilots assembling and receiving orders for where to go.<\/p>\n

He hoped they had enough time to mount a proper defense against the Cylons.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Apollo headed back up to the bridge upon hearing the Enterprise going to red alert. The bridge was active once more with people moving around as he headed straight towards Tigh who was talking with an older gentleman from Earth.<\/p>\n

\u201cLocated here, we should be able send out the viper squadrons make the Cylons hesitate slightly,\u201d Tigh said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right, I\u2019ll inform the viper squadrons, we\u2019re only about half full,\u201d the man replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll go with you,\u201d Apollo said. \u201cI can take charge of the group here, but what\u2019s the situation?\u201d Apollo asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll bring him up to speed on the way down to the pilots,\u201d the man said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood, Informing the shuttle coming up to go back and let them know what is going on, and we\u2019ll inform them when we return,\u201d Tigh said moving over to the communications station as Apollo and the man left the bridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are from the Galactica?\u201d the man asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cApollo, strike captain,\u201d Apollo replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cTom,\u201d he replied back. \u201cShort version of what\u2019s going on,\u201d he said as they reached the elevator, \u201cthe Galactica called saying they had a Cylon basestar closing in on the Colonial fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apollo understood the situation now.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to launch vipers and try to confuse them,\u201d Tom said to him.<\/p>\n

Apollo understood the situation and as they left the elevator and headed to the pilot\u2019s briefing room to see a room only about half full. Less than he hoped to have, but he did noticed Starbuck in the room which would help.\u00a0 It seemed Sheba and Boomer were still on the planet\u2019s surface, and Jolly had returned to the Galactica.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s up?\u201d Starbuck said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCylons have been spotted,\u201d Apollo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlready?\u201d one said sounding a bit surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of handle, I know, but the Cylons are real, they wish to destroy all of humanity, and the machines on Earth,\u201d Tom said speaking up. \u201cThe people you know in the Matrix, they need your protection here and now.\u00a0 If we don\u2019t stop the Cylons here, they will destroy everyone in the Matrix.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words seemed to have a desired effect on the people in the room as Apollo noticed a change in the atmosphere as they realized what the consequences of the battle could be.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right, everyone to their vipers, Captain Apollo will be squad leader,\u201d Tom said to the group.<\/p>\n

Apollo watched as they all looked at him, and he hoped they knew how to fly the fighter before making his way to the sleds which would take them to the hangar. Starbuck stepped up beside him as they shared a look.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think this will work?\u201d he asked quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHas to,\u201d Apollo replied as they found themselves at the hangar. He made his way to one of the vipers fueled and ready as everyone searched for an empty viper.\u00a0 They had yet to actually assign vipers but the crew chief took charge assigning people as they came out.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Adama watched as the two formations of fighters reached each other and engaged as the Galactica headed out of the fleet towards the threat. He had sent a couple of vipers behind the fleet to make sure no Cylons were coming from other directions.\u00a0 He did not need to be caught between two forces like he was trying to have done to the Cylons.<\/p>\n

\u201cSquadrons engaged,\u201d Omega said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCylon basestar on scanners,\u201d Athena said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right, here we go,\u201d Adama said. \u201cPrepare engagement course alpha.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes sir,\u201d Omegas replied, relaying the instructions to the helm.<\/p>\n

Now he had to wait until they engaged and hoped the Enterprise would arrive soon. One on one the Galactica would be in a struggle against a basestar.\u00a0 It would win, but there were many factors which could determine the outcome of the battle.\u00a0 Many he never could predict beforehand.<\/p>\n

The scanner showed the two fighters engaged and losses were beginning to mount. He knew his pilots were veterans and would do their best.\u00a0 He only wished they all would return.\u00a0 For now he had to give them the best opportunity to return and not waste a single warriors\u2019 life.<\/p>\n

The Galactica continued to close in on the basestar.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Hades looked down as the centurions worked to engage in battle. Reports of vipers coming from the fleet did not surprise him much, the human commander would not leave the fleet unguarded.<\/p>\n

\u201cScanners report a battlestar leaving the fleet and heading towards us,\u201d a centurion said confusing Hades.<\/p>\n

\u201cA battlestar?\u201d he replied, wondering if there was some sort of malfunction going on. \u201cAre the scanners working properly?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cScanners are operational, there is a battlestar heading towards us,\u201d the centurion said.<\/p>\n

It made no sense to Hades. How could this be?\u00a0 There were no reports of the battlestar passing them and rejoining the fleet and if that was the case then he had only one other possible solution, there were two battlestars.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrepare to withdraw at once,\u201d he said to the centurions.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy your command.\u201d<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Apollo flew along with the rest of the squadron who had actually lined up quite well for their first time. They had been \u2018taught\u2019 by the Matrix and he hoped they were able to fight at worst. \u00a0The best solution would be the Cylons would run at the sight of them coming.<\/p>\n

Starbuck had lined up next to him, his normal wingman making things seem a bit more normal. He knew it wouldn\u2019t take too long before the Cylon basestar would appear on the scanners and wasn\u2019t disappointed when it suddenly appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right everyone, stay in formation, we\u2019ll start with an attack run on the basestar,\u201d Apollo said to the group.<\/p>\n

He watched the scanner as the group lined up and they headed towards the basestar which seemed to suddenly turn and head away. They must have caught it by surprise as it no longer was heading in the direction of the fleet, nor was it heading towards Earth.\u00a0 The path was taking it away from both.<\/p>\n

\u201cApollo, what do we do now?\u201d Starbuck\u2019s voice asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking on it,\u201d Apollo replied taking it all in. The biggest problem was they did not have the fuel to actually do anything.\u00a0 None of the vipers were completely fueled due to the shortages on the Enterprise at the moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll vipers, head back to the Enterprsie,\u201d Apollo said finally.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou sure?\u201d a voice asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d Apollo said. \u201cWe\u2019ve done what we can to do,\u201d Apollo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apollo watched as the basestar left his scanners and turned around himself to head on back. It felt wrong, but he wasn\u2019t about to take this group into combat with all the problems if he could avoid it.\u00a0 He made a mental note to start the training program to get everything organized so next time they would know what to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cSkull one to Enterprise,\u201d Apollo said using the name of the squad the pilots had come up with.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnterprise, go ahead Skull one,\u201d the reply came back.<\/p>\n

\u201cInform the commander we\u2019re heading back, basestar is running,\u201d Apollo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAcknowledged.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued on hoping he made the right call this time. He hated leaving a basestar which knew about them, but, they needed some more time to get things ready.<\/p>\n

Apollo waited a second before turning around and heading back as well.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Adama watching on the bridge of the Galactica as the raiders suddenly broke off and headed back towards the basestar which had changed course. He had an idea of why it might have done that, but didn\u2019t want to celebrate too early, as it might be part of their plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cInform all pilots to head back,\u201d Adama said looking at Omega who merely nodded and carried out the order.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommander, incoming message from the Enterprise,\u201d Athena said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPut it though,\u201d Adama said, looking down at the monitor to see Tigh\u2019s face on the screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdama, Apollo states the basestar is withdrawing?\u201d Tigh asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt appears so,\u201d Adama said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to let it get away?\u201d Tigh asked, something Adama was grabbling with as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no idea if there are other basestars around, or if retreating is part of their tactic here. I can\u2019t leave the fleet unguarded,\u201d Adama replied.\u00a0 \u201cAnd the Enterprise is still working up to full combat strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

He watched Tigh consider that before replying back.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, of course, I just don\u2019t like seeing something get away,\u201d Tigh replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand,\u201d Adama said. \u201cHow operational is the Enterprise?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMost crewmembers are on board, especially the essential systems,\u201d Tigh said. \u201cWe haven\u2019t really gone through any tests.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHead back to Earth and take it though the tests, we need it operational as soon as possible,\u201d Adama said.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnderstood,\u201d Tigh replied, as the conversation ended. He realized there was a lot to still do and he hoped the Cylons didn\u2019t have a trap set up for him.<\/p>\n

*****<\/p>\n

Hades would have frowned if he had the ability to, instead he looked on in confusion at what had happened. He was sure that the fleet had been undefended, and by a battlestar so he was shocked when the battlestar appeared on their scanners.<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, and unfathomable, another battlestar had appeared behind him. It shouldn\u2019t be as he scanned the records to show him what happened.\u00a0 To add to the impossible calculations the human fleet, which outnumbered him now had ceased pursuit of him.<\/p>\n

None of it made any sense to him at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cReport centurions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy your command,\u201d the centurion said. \u201cWe\u2019ve lost the following Colonial warriors.\u201d<\/p>\n

That also confused him. The vipers behind us?\u201d Hades asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave retreated back to the planet and the battlestar there,\u201d the centurion said.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery well, maintain patrols,\u201d Hades said, watching as the centurions replied and turned around to carry out the orders.<\/p>\n

Hades looked down at the scanners and the placement of nearby Cylon forces as he logically considered the only explanation of why there was a second battlestar, the Pegasus. If that was the case then he was up against Commander Cain and would need to be cautious.\u00a0 Cain was known even in the Cylon Empire as a military genius.<\/p>\n

He would need a plan.<\/p>\n
